What I hate about writing:

So much of it is just staring at a computer screen or the wall in frustration. I have to have a 15-page memoir essay by tonight & all the words are terrible (when they even bother appearing at all). I bought a fancy cupcake to reward myself with when I finish but it’s starting to look like I’ll never get to eat it.

Eros the melter of limbs (now again) stirs me—
sweetbitter unmanageable creature who steals in

Sappho, fragment 130 (trans Anne Carson)

[ Why yes I am spending my Friday night reading poetry. I might even pop open a bottle of wine. It’s an amazing Friday, and summer, and it was beautiful out today, and I got my car cleaned which I’ve only done twice since I got it three (three?! holy cow) years ago—anyway I feel wonderful and productive and I’ve been thinking of updating this all day but can’t seem to bring myself to do more than a baby-post-snippet. I’m feeling weird about blogging. I’m always feeling weird about blogging. But I do love Sappho. ]

things i could do without:

those awkward phone conversations when you’re first getting to know someone you like

(when you’re aware everything you’re saying sounds uncool, which makes you hyper-prone to saying even MORE uncool things, and then you think: maybe i AM the uncoolest person in the history of the universe and STOP TALKING ABOUT POETRY AND HOW YOU DIDNT GO OUT ALL WEEKEND THAT MAKES YOU LOOK SO GODDAMN UNAPPEALING but you can’t stop)
